The Indian Hills High School Horticulture classes, under the direction of Mrs. Manzi, Mr. Michels, and Mr. Poalillo, worked cooperatively this year to build a rain garden on campus. The project is designed to use recycled rainwater from the roof’s gutters to irrigate the plants. The rain garden area prevents the rain water runoff from entering the paved areas on campus, picking up pollution and then entering the storm water basins. A rain garden is a great way to prevent waste water runoff and to improve the beauty of a landscaped area. We have selected plants that are indigenous to New Jersey and at the same time will attract local wildlife such as butterflies and hummingbirds. We would like to thank the PTSO for supporting our efforts by providing a grant to purchase our plants as well as What’s Blooming in Wyckoff for helping with our plant designs and selections.
