ANTI-DRUG UPDATE - April 22,
2010
Celebration Season:
Preventing Substance Abuse During Prom and Graduation Season
High school prom and
graduation are important milestones in a young person's life, and the season is
often marked with parties, outings, and other celebrations. During this time,
teens may feel more pressure to celebrate by partying with illicit drugs,
alcohol, or even prescription (Rx) drugs.
In fact, from 2008 to 2009,
the percent of teens who say their "friends usually get high at parties"
increased from 69 percent to 75 percent. Further, studies show that 56 percent of teens believe Rx
drugs are easier to get than illegal drugs, and more than half (55.9%) of
people who use Rx drugs nonmedically say they got the drugs from a friend or
relative for free
It's up to parents,
teachers, and the local community to help teens celebrate these occasions in a
fun and safe manner.
To help prevent teens from
turning to prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications as part of their
celebrations, the Campaign is offering a new "Teen Prescription Drug Abuse
Video Discussion Guide" to accompany the "Teens in Treatment"
video. The guide serves as an aid for communities to host discussions with
teens and share tips with parents. Both of these resources are available online
at http://www.TheAntiDrug.com/Resources/Teen-rx.aspx.
Schools and community
organizations can also take advantage of the downloadable and customizable
"Senior Year" and "Prom" Open Letter advertisements - both
are available in color and black and white, and are accessible online at
http://www.TheAntiDrug.com/OpenLetter. A vibrant "Prom" postcard is
also available to order for distribution to youth at
www.TheAntiDrug.com/Resources.
Other customizable ads, as
well as many FREE resources such as brochures, CD-ROMs, posters, and postcards,
are available to help community groups and parents address the abuse of drugs
and alcohol, as well as other risky behaviors. Please visit
www.TheAntiDrug.com/Resources to download materials or place your order.
Tips for Parents
By following a few simple
tips, parents in your community can help keep their teens safe during prom and
graduation celebrations:
* Set clear rules about no drug and alcohol use,
establish consequences, and reinforce expectations.
* Provide safe and fun alternatives such as
chaperoned alcohol and drug-free after prom and graduation parties.
* Be aware and ask questions; know who they will
be with, where they will be, and at what times.
* Be a good role model.
At this time of year,
parents need to be aware of what their teens are doing and talk to them about
the dangers of drugs and alcohol, the consequences of using, and the risks to
their future. Bad choices, like using drugs or alcohol, could change their
lives forever.
