Science, Medicine & Research
Core Honors Courses
Students in the Science, Medicine, and Research Program take Honors courses in Medical Issues UP, Human Anatomy UP, Introduction to Healthcare Careers UP, Biomechanics UP, and Science Research UP. Each year they also spend additional periods daily in core science courses (Biology UP/Honors DE, Chemistry UP/Honors DE, and AP Physics/H Physics DE) that prepare them for future coursework, experiences, and AP exams. In the senior year, Science, Medicine, and Research Program students join other University Program students in the interdisciplinary Philosophy of Knowledge UP course.
Thinking and Working Like a Scientist
Students who are interested in a variety of science and health-related occupations including doctor, dentist, physical therapist, veterinarian, and researcher will benefit from enrollment in UP Science, Medicine, and Research. The program emphasizes independent study and research. Hands-on activities involve the use of specialized scientific equipment, such as computer-based laboratory probes, that measure and record data in the lab and in the field.
Science Research
During the junior year Science Research course, students investigate and produce a report on a major topic. They also prepare a visual display of their research for presentation at a science fair or symposium. The skills and knowledge acquired in this course provide a solid foundation for those students who choose research electives in their junior and senior years.
21st Century Skills
Throughout this four-year program, students will develop and acquire the skills necessary for the 21st century. All of the science courses focus on developing a student’s ability to think critically and problem-solve, collaborate with others to meet an end goal, and communicate their understandings and findings in a variety of ways. In addition, students will acquire and apply the relevant technological skills for today's society throughout their learning.
