Director of Special Education
Dr. Frank Mauriello was appointed Director of Special Education for the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District in August 2022. He brings more than 25 years of experience in public education, having served in a variety of instructional and support roles in Ridgewood Public Schools and as Director of Special Services in the Verona Public Schools.
Throughout his career, Dr. Mauriello has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to advancing inclusive education and meeting the diverse needs of learners. He is known for guiding families through the special education process, designing high-quality programs, and fostering collaborative relationships among students, staff, and families. His leadership is grounded in a deep understanding of special education systems and a passion for student-centered service.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field, Dr. Mauriello was named the New Jersey Special Education Administrator of the Year in 2022 by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators (NJASA) and the New Jersey Association of Pupil Services Administrators (NJAPSA).
Since joining the district, Dr. Mauriello has led a series of transformational initiatives aimed at improving the effectiveness, consistency, and alignment of special education services. Central to his leadership philosophy is the belief that all decisions must reflect the commitment to “always place children first.” He prioritizes transparent communication, collaborative planning, and strong relationships to foster a culture of support and respect across the district.
Under his direction, the special education department underwent a comprehensive restructuring to establish a unified, district-wide model. This included the creation of new supervisory roles to promote alignment and accountability across both high schools. Instructional practices were enhanced through the implementation of a revised In-Class Resource (ICR) model, and IEP development and compliance were strengthened through targeted professional development and the adoption of best practices. Dr. Mauriello also redesigned the transition process for incoming ninth-grade students to ensure a smoother and more supportive experience.
In addition, he has prioritized equitable access to services, ensuring that all students receive consistent, high-quality support regardless of school placement. Mental health services have expanded through the launch of the district’s THRIVE initiative, and new specialized programs have been created to address a broader range of student needs. Family and community engagement has also been significantly enhanced through the revitalization of the Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG), which now serves as a collaborative forum for feedback and partnership.
Dr. Mauriello’s commitment to excellence, equity, and continuous improvement continues to drive the work of the special education department. Through his leadership, the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District remains focused on creating inclusive, student-centered learning environments where every child is given the opportunity to succeed.
