The Ramapo-Indian Hills Community is gearing up for another impactful year as they host the annual Relay For Life event this May 15th at Indian Hills High school.

Relay for Life club students from both high schools in the district work together to plan this annual tradition. Relay brings the community together for an overnight celebration of life from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM, rotating between the Ramapo and Indian Hills campuses each year.

It’s a powerful night filled with music, interactive craft stands, and the moving luminaria ceremony, where personalized bags are lit to honor and remember those affected by cancer.

This week, students gained understanding about the fundraising effort which benefits the American Cancer Society and took their "First Lap”.

The "First Lap" is a simple but powerful symbol: a single walk around a block, a gym, or even a mall that represents the start of the journey to end cancer. To make these laps personal, participants are using official American Cancer Society "Relay First Lap" signs to display their "why." The reasons are as diverse as our community—some Relay for a grandmother who beat breast cancer, others in memory of an uncle who lost his battle with colon cancer, and many to support patients who need help getting to and from their treatments. These personal stories are the driving force behind every step we take.

As we look toward the 2026 event, participants are encouraged to join or form a team and aim for the $25 individual fundraising milestone to gain entry to the field. Whether you are walking laps throughout the night or simply showing up to support the cause, every contribution helps in the fight against cancer. Let’s make 2026 the most successful Relay yet!
