Migration from Microsoft Office

The RIH District will begin phasing out Microsoft Office during the 2021-22 school year and will continue with the Google Workspace productivity platform.
Incoming freshmen and transfer students will not have Microsoft Office installed on their district issued laptops. Students should start using Google Workspace apps exclusively for their homework assignments / projects (e.g Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, etc.). Microsoft Office Suite will be deactivated on all student laptops in December 2021. If necessary, students could convert their Office files to the Google format. 

  • Open Google Drive and double-click an existing Office file.
  • Click File > then Save as Google Docs/Sheets/Slides.

  •  To automatically convert all future uploads of Office files to Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides: 
  • In Google Drive, at the top, click Settings
  • Next to Convert uploads, turn on Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format. Note: Previously uploaded files will not be converted.
